SUMMARY:PV - Adventure Ride
DESCRIPTION:Read the Club’s liability waiver and understand that your par
ticipation in a ride constitutes acceptance of the waiver. The waiver is f
ound here.\n\nBefore you join ANY PV ride\, read this page which spells o
ut what is expected from you.\nPortland Velo is now offering an Adventure
Ride. Generally\, this ride will be on Saturday\, but at times may be move
d to Sunday. These rides are seasonal and will change as the weather chang
es throughout the year. \nIf you are not a Portland Velo member and want
to join us for a ride\, use the Contact page to request links and maps sen
t via email.\n\nAdventure rides are generally between 60 and 75 miles and
range from 4500 to 6500 feet of climbing.  Ride starts will vary across t
he greater Portland Metro\, Hood River and the Willamette Valley. \n\nThes
e are challenging rides\, with a significant amount of climbing. The gener
al rule of thumb is to regroup at the top of each climb and then descend t
ogether so we can paceline across the valleys to the next climb. Michele C
hirgwin is leading the rides and sets the pace between 18-20 mph on the fl
at sections. Separate ride groups can be created at the start of the ride
based on individual preferences. The goal is to have fun\, stay together a
s much as possible and to NOT leave anyone on their own.\n\nLink to the ro
ute: (you must be logged in and have active membership to see this next se
 ction)\n\n[pms-restrict subscription_plans="202"]\nRoute 1: Carlton_Meadow
lake Loop (72.3 Miles and 5781 ft)\n[/pms-restrict]\n\nBe sure to read the
documents on the Portland Velo website before joining the group for the f
irst time as this ride will follow all the guidelines and rules that are e
xpected on the Saturday Signature Ride.\n\nPlease make sure you have eithe
r the route downloaded onto your GPS device (Garmin\, Wahoo\, phone etc...
) or print out the cue sheet.\n\nStart location is:  Carlton\, Oregon - a
t the cross streets of Kutch &amp\; Grant. There is parking and restrooms
on the back side of Upper City Park.\n\nWe roll at 8:00 am\, so please arr
ive early enough to get ready.\n\nThere are two water/food stops on the ro
ute and they are marked on the RWGPS map.\n\nWater stop 1 - Sheridan - Ame
rican Market - mile 44\n\nWater stop 2  - outskirts of McMinnville - Circ
le K - mile 61\n\nHazards are marked on the RWGPS map.\n\nAt mile 20 you w
ill reach the summit. Take a hard right up the side road to locate the bat
hrooms.\n\nThe descent is 15 miles and very rough in spots. Additionally\,
there are rumble strips at periodic dirt road intersections to slow/preve
nt off road vehicles from using the paved road.  The road is shady\, so w
ear clear glasses or very light sunglasses.\n\nAt mile 34 there is turn to
the left onto Coast Creek Rd. Be cautious as the next left onto Buck Holl
ow comes up fast\, at mile 36.5 and you immediately start climbing.\n\nAft
er leaving Sheridan we are on Hwy 18 for 1.5 miles. There is a wide should
er\, so cyclists have plenty of room. We have to turn left across traffic\
, so everyone needs to stay together\, be patient\, take the lane together
and cross safely.\n\nAt mile 65 we turn left onto Westside Road for 1.5 m
iles. This is a busy road\, so we need to stay together. We turn left acro
ss traffic onto Sitton Rd. Be patient\, take the lane and cross safely.\n\
nAt mile 67.6 we turn right onto Hill Road\, which is gravel for one mile.
For some reason\, GPS is showing Shelton as gravel\, which is not accurat
 e. I have ridden this route already this year and once you turn onto Shelt
on it turns to pavement.  I utilize this short gravel section to stay off
Westside\, which is too busy to ride comfortably.\n\nAfter the ride\, pla
n to meet at the Carlton Bakery for treats and espresso.\n\nNutrition Guid
ance\n\nPlease bring sufficient bars and GUs to make your ride enjoyable a
nd to prevent bonking. I generally plan 1 bar per hour. We have two food s
tops\, so there will be opportunities to stock up.\n\nI bring two full wat
er bottles and refill at each water stop.
